With the election right around the corner, there's something each of us needs to think about. Do we want both the Executive branch and The Legislative Branch to be controlled by the same party?
Proponents of same party control argue that it's easier to push through an agenda when the same party controls Congress and the Whitehouse. Opponents obviously argue the opposite viewpoint.
Which view you have probably depends on whether or not your party is likely to be in control.
In recent history, we had a Republican controlled Whitehouse and Congress for six years. Do you think any more was achieved as a result of this? For the last two years, Democrats have controlled Congress with a Republican President. Did anything significant change with the shift in power? Based on Congressional approval numbers, I would say not.
All in all, though, I think it is perhaps a good thing to have a balance of power. Instead of insisting on splitting the power, however, perhaps what we should focus on is insisting that both parties work together to address the people's business and to stop the constant bickering.
The American people deserve better. We have issues facing this country of monumental proportions and if this divisiveness continues, the impact to all of us will be significant.
Each party needs to accept the fact that no matter if they are currently in control or not, history shows that it probably won't last for long. The better strategy is to find some common ground and start getting things done.
Americans recently polled by Gallup show that only 7% are satisfied with the way things are going in America. There's your sign!
I suggest each of us contact our Senators and Representatives and let them know we expect more from them. That they need to start working together to solve problems facing our country and should stop the endless partisanship that has become so characteristic of politics today.
